So, let’s get into it!

1. What is direct to garment printing?

Before we can get into the detailed questions, one of the most important things to know is what actually is Direct to Garment printing?

Direct to Garment printing consists of using water-based ink and pretreat to print artwork and designs directly onto a garment without the use of a transfer. You can use DTG to print high quality and greatly detailed designs while skipping those steps of having to create transfers and placing those transfers onto shirts!

DTG printing looks great on items such as:

  • Fabric Bags
  • Canvas
  • Linens
  • T-Shirts
  • …and so much more!

2. What type of materials can be used for DTG prints?

Now that we know a little bit about what DTG is and some items you can print on, you may be wondering what fabric types are best for DTG prints.

The most suitable fabrics are cotton, natural fibers, and light polyester. There are also some eco-friendly solutions that you can use such as bamboo and hemp fabrics.

3. What’s the max print size on the DTG G4?

Once you have chosen your fabric choices whether it’s cotton, light polyester, or whatever it may be we now need to make sure your garment can fit on the DTG G4 platens.

The max print size for the DTG G4 is 16×20 inches. Your printer will also come with multiple platens of other sizes which we will get into next.

4. What platens come with the DTG G4?

Still staying on the topic of platen sizes, let’s get into the different size platens that comes with the DTG G4 printer.

The DTG G4 package comes with 3 platen sizes including:

  • 16x20 inches
  • 14x18 inches
  • 10.5x13 inches

All of these platens are equipped with a patented vacuum technology that allows you to place your garment onto the printer without any type of hooping or adhering.

Now that we know a little bit about the DTG G4 let’s talk about one of the biggest benefits of purchasing this printer.

5. Can DTG G4 be used as a DTF printer?

The DTG G4 has many benefits and one of those is that as well as its direct to garment capabilities, it also has the ability to perform as a direct to film printer as well! Who doesn’t love a two-for-one deal?

The DTG G4 package comes with the DTF printing kit that includes DTF powder, DTF Film, and a shaker tube, so you are ready to start printing DTF transfers right away!

Being able to bring DTF printing to the table with the DTG G4 printer brings many advantages that we will get into later on.

6. What is the difference between DTG and DTF printing?

Since DTG and DTF printing are two very different processes and consist of different materials, you may find that you prefer one process over the other so let’s get into what those differences are.

While both DTG and DTF printing use the same water-based ink, the direct to film process uses a film that the ink is applied to and then shaken in a loose powder that adds adhesive to the back of the transfer and is then applied to the garment using a heat press. On the other hand, the direct to garment process includes printing the ink directly onto the garment using a vacuum platen that pulls the ink into the fibers of the garment.

7. What are the advantages of having a DTG printer with DTF capabilities?

Now that we know the difference between DTG and DTF, why is it so valuable that the DTG G4 is DTF compatible?

One of the biggest advantages is that creating those DTF transfers give you the ability to print on fabrics like synthetics and dark polyesters.

Another benefit to having a DTF capability on the DTG G4 is that you can print on hard-to-reach areas such as:

  • Left Chest Logos
  • Sleeves
  • Shoulder Placement
  • Collar of Shirts

You also print multiple designs on one sheet of DTF film which will save you time and money!

8. Do I need to pretreat when I’m using my G4 as a DTF printer?

So, once you have created all of your transfers using the DTF process on the DTG G4, what’s next?

When it comes to using the printer as a DTG printer, you will use pretreat as your “adhesive” for the ink to really adhere to the shirt.

With the DTF process you will not need to use pretreat, instead the DTF powder is applied to the transfer after printing which will adhere your design to the garment using a heat press.

9. Do I need an extractor unit?

With traditional DTF printing you would need an extractor unit to remove the smoke and fumes from the dryer so that it is not released into the surrounding air.

When using the DTG G4 as a DTF printer you DO NOT need an extractor because we are using a heat press to cure the powder.

10. What type of heat press is ideal?

We hope that these answers help to educate you on Direct to Garment and Direct to Film printing using the DTG G4 or maybe even helped guide you on your decision to add the DTG G4 to your business. Meet DTG Ink: What It Is and How It Works in Printing? - Winnerjet

If you’re getting into t-shirt printing, you’ve probably heard of DTG printing. But what exactly is DTG ink, and why is it important? In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know in plain language.

???? What Is DTG Ink?

DTG ink stands for Direct to Garment ink. It’s a type of water-based ink used in special printers that can print designs straight onto t-shirts and other clothes.

Instead of using screens or vinyl, DTG printers work like an inkjet printer—spraying the ink directly onto fabric. This makes it great for printing detailed, full-color images quickly and easily.

????️ How Does DTG Ink Work?

Here’s a simple look at the DTG printing process:

  1. Pretreat the fabric (especially dark shirts) to help the ink stick.
  2. Dry the shirt so it’s ready for printing.
  3. Print the design using a DTG printer and DTG ink.
  4. Heat press the shirt to set the ink so it won’t wash out.

This process helps the ink stay bright and last longer, even after many washes.

???? Why Use DTG Ink?

DTG ink has some big advantages, especially for small or custom orders:

  • Soft Feel: The print becomes part of the fabric—no heavy or rubbery texture.
  • Vibrant Colors: DTG inks give you bold, detailed designs.
  • Eco-Friendly: Most DTG inks are water-based and safer for the environment.
  • Perfect for Small Runs: No setup costs, so it’s great for printing just one shirt.
  • Fast and Easy: You can go from design to printed shirt in just minutes.

???? What Kind of Shirts Work Best?

DTG ink works best on:

  • 100% cotton shirts – The ink soaks in well, and colors pop.
  • Cotton blends – These work, too, though prints might be slightly duller.
  • Light-colored polyester – Only with special prep; not ideal for beginners.

Avoid dark polyester or nylon—they’re harder to print on, and the results might not last.

???? Washing & Care Tips for DTG Prints

To keep your printed shirts looking great:

  • Wash inside out in cold water
  • Air dry or tumble dry on low
  • Don’t bleach or use strong detergents
  • Avoid ironing directly over the design

These simple steps help the print last longer and stay bright.
